Checking Your BMW Tire Pressure

Mechanic Checking Tire Pressure With Gauge

Nobody likes to walk out to their car to find out its tires are low. Tire air pressure is important to maintain, and BMW tire pressure is no exception. BMW of Mamaroneck in Westchester knows you want to get the longest life possible from your BMW tires, so we explain below how to check tire pressure, how to use a tire pressure gauge, what the appropriate BMW tire pressure is, and what to do if you can’t find your BMW spare tire. That’s just about everything you’ll need to know!

What is the Recommended BMW Tire Pressure?

The recommended tire pressure is 32 psi on most BMW tires. However, there is a chance that your model has a different requirement, so we strongly recommend you check your manual, or the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door.

It’s important to keep your tires at the recommended BMW tire pressure. Overinflating can damage the tire. Leaving a tire underinflated can reduce gas mileage and the life of the tire itself. Even if you have the BMW X3 towing capacity at your disposal, improperly inflated tires can hold you back from adventure. So, knowing how to check tire pressure is just as important as knowing how to change a tire.

How to Check Tire Pressure with a Tire Pressure Gauge

The first thing you’ll need when checking your BMW tire pressure is a tire pressure gauge. Maybe you’re fortunate enough to be close to a gas station with an air machine when you notice one of your tires is low. In that case, a tire gauge or pressure display can usually be found on the machine, or on the hose coming from the machine. Or, maybe you carry a portable air compressor for tires in your trunk. These devices also have tire pressure gauges.

Once you’re sure you have what you need, simply unscrew the stem cap, securely connect the hose to the stem, and inflate the tire until the gauge reads the correct pressure.

If you are not near one of these machines and need to check the pressure in your BMW tires, or if you need to inflate your tires with a device that does not have a tire gauge, you will need to use a standalone tire gauge. In this case, check the pressure before and after you inflate the tire. If you have overinflated the tire, press the gauge partly down the stem, just enough to hear the hissing noise. Let a little air out, then check the pressure again.

I Can’t Find My BMW Spare Tire!

Some BMW models do not come with a spare tire. In fact, that’s true of about 1/3 of new cars. But don’t panic if one of your tires become flat while you’re driving around Larchmont. BMW tires are “run-flat”, which means they can run while flat for approximately 150 miles.

Of course, it’s never a good idea to push that limit! We recommend taking your vehicle to the nearest facility that can replace your BMW tire as soon as possible. If you’re anywhere near Westchester, the BMW of Mamaroneck tire center can help you out today.
